What Garth Ennis Thinks About AMC’s “Preacher”

AMC is making an adaption of Garth Ennis´ comic “Preacher” that will be aired next year. The author himself already had the opportunity to watch the pilot episode and the trailer of the show and here is what he thinks.

“I never really look at that sort of stuff because it’s not my department, but I’m told lots of people are talking about the trailer – so great news for the guys pushing the show. I did hear that Amazon sold out of book one, which is great (so long as they had more than half a dozen copies in stock).  I’m delighted with [the trailer]. I like Jesse’s grim dialogue taking you through it, and his explosion into violence. And Cassidy’s little moment at the end is the icing on the cake… I’ve seen the pilot, which I think is excellent – the trailer hits just the right note. The thought of watching each episode as it’s completed, seeing what they’ve done with the story. They’ve added a good deal to the basic plot of Preacher, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the results.”, says Ennis.

About AMC he adds:
“Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a two-hour movie. Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and it’s exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that Preacher needs. Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin along with Neal Moritz and his team refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be. I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully – meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation. All in all, it looks like Preacher can now be brought to TV in a way that I’d previously not have thought possible, and I very much appreciate that Steve and I have been included in the conversation in the way that we have.”

Garth Ennis´colleague and artist of the comics, Steve Dillon, got quoted on his Facebook page as follows:
“I finally got to see the full pilot (now Episode 1) round at Garth’s place a couple of weeks ago. I liked it! The series is not going to be a slavish adaptation of the book but we always new it wouldn’t be. It wouldn’t work if it was. A lot of the supporting characters will be there but not necessarily turning up as and when they did in the book. As regards Cassidy’s shades, I don’t think it will bother people when things get going and it allows Mr. Gilgun a lot of room that he wouldn’t have had otherwise. Me and Garth always said we wanted the series to keep the spirit of the book rather than all the details. I believe they will. Cheers!”. That already sounds promising.
