Every episode a new villain, every episode a new boredom. The first season of “Gotham” did not live up to the expectations. But according to Jim Gordon actor Ben McKenzie in season 2 this will change.
As a Batman fan of course I was excited about the new TV series “Gotham“. But after seeing a few chapters it became very clear that the show dissappointed. Almost every episode they introduced a new villain and they told the backstory of the characters way too quickly. “What is this, CSI Miami?” were one of my thoughts. But I still think that the show has a lot of potential. It has good actors, the city of Gotham is created authentically and let’s admit it: The story was a good idea! I don’t remember a Batman comic where the story of Batman was told from the perspective of James Gordon. But the series still needs a lot of work – and according to actor Ben McKenzie it will get it.
In an interview with “Entertainment Weekly” he admits the mistakes that were made: “I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever. That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it.” Well, confessing it, is making the first move. He continues by promising that season 2 will be better: “The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them. Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see.”
Let’s hope so! After the great success of “Daredevil” the expectations are even higher. But let’s be fair. It didn’t help “Gotham” that there were a number of hiatuses because Fox added six more episodes to the first season in October 2014. So with more planning now the show will be better? On September 21 we will find out the truth.
